Over the years, we have pitched for business we did not win, declined business we could have taken, and on occasion ended relationships that were no longer working. Each of those decisions was made for the same reason. The work only succeeds when the partnership does.

Public relations, reputation management, and communications strategy are not transactional services. They cannot be delivered effectively at arm's length, on a purely contractual basis, by an agency that does not genuinely understand the client’s business — or that does not feel the freedom to give honest counsel when honest counsel is what the situation requires.

We have turned away new clients because the culture was wrong. We declined to pitch when the brief told us the relationship would not be one of genuine partnership. We have stopped working with clients who were disrespectful to our team, because an agency that tolerates that has already compromised the standards on which its work depends.

None of those decisions was difficult. All of them were right.
